MEET THE TEAMS OF 2020

Team name: NULL

Institution: East China Normal University

Coach: Chunyun Xiao

1. Is there a person or story your team admires or looks to for inspiration?

We admire the members of “F0RE1GNERS”, our seniors who took part in the ICPC 2019 World Finals , a lot. Their excellent results achieved through hard working have been encouraging us during our training this year. We always have a dream that someday we would be able to compete in World Finals for our college and even our country, just like they did.

2. At what age(s) did you begin programming?

One of our team members began to take part in programming contests when he was in primary school (about eleven years old ), while the other two team members began at Grade one in high school ( about sixteen years old). We have all taken part in Olympiad in Informatics, but neither of us made much achievement, so we are motivated to strive for higher goals in ICPC.

3. Are there any obstacles your team has had to overcome?

Our level is not among the highest in the World Finals. In many fields, at most one of us takes a grasp. This influences effective teamwork when solving complex problems sometimes. For now, we’re trying to enlarge our scope of knowledge to enhance collaboration.

4. How did you come up with your team name?

When our team first established, recording trainings on “acm.ecnu.edu” requires a team name. At that time, the captain wrote a “_” at random. For the regional contest began, we look for an English name corresponding to “_”, so we named it “NULL”, which means empty.

5. What do you do in a typical team practice session?

We choose to train with a real set of problems from previous competitions for most of the time. While training, we try to simulate the conditions on site: three members share one computer and print our code when necessary. We adapt ourselves to real environment in this way.

The 2020 World Finals are lucky to have this amazing team compete this year!
