ACM-ICPC is made possible through the efforts of an extensive and dedicated group of international volunteers. One feature of the opening ceremonies was the announcement of the award winners for accolades given by ACM-ICPC and UPE for 2014.

The computer science honor society Upsilon Pi Epsilon has supported competitive programming since its inception, and tonight gave its top award, the abacus award, to James Comer, the ACM-ICPC Director of Regional Contests. Dr. Comer’s lists of participations and accomplishments are as long as his list of friends from around the world that he has made through his involvement with the ICPC. In an emotional acceptance speech, he encouraged the audience to find a passion to change their lives like ACM-ICPC has changed his.
