MEET THE TEAMS OF 2020

Team name: pu+os

Institution: Facultad de Ciencias-Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México

Coach: Andrés Flores

1. Does your team do any activities together outside of ICPC preparation?

We are friends even before forming the team. Sometimes we have lunch together during university hours, and after Friday’s training sessions we sometimes go out

2. At what age(s) did you begin programming?

All team members started around the time they started their university studies, so approximately when they were 18 years old.

3. How did you come up with your team name?

It’s a pun. The plus (+) symbol in Spanish is pronounced /mas/, so the pronunciation for C++ in Spanish is /θe mas mas/, which is the programming language we use in competitions. Our university’s mascot is a puma (also spelled/pronounced puma in Spanish, and pumas for plural), so our team name, PU++, is pronounced /pumasmas/, thus linking our mascot and the programming language.

4. What are your team members majoring in? How does that help them with programming?

Two of them are majoring in mathematics, and the other one is majoring in computer science. Mathematics is strongly related to computer science and strengthens problems solving skills. Computer science majors have data structures and algorithms courses (which are optionally offered for math majors) from which useful theory for competitive programming is learned.

5. What’s your team’s secret for all sharing one computer efficiently?

Communication is essential.

Congrats team “pu+os”! Way to go!
