MEET THE TEAMS OF 2020

Team name: Sometimes I Drink Barbecue Sauce In My Nightmares

Institution: The University of Western Australia

Coach: Tim French

1. Does your team do any activities together outside of ICPC preparation?

We are all part of a club at our university, where we share our skills and knowledge and teach each other programming and various other technical topics and skills.

2. At what age(s) did you begin programming?

I started programming in Scratch at 14 years old, started actual programming in Python at 15 years old.

3. Are there any obstacles your team has had to overcome?

It took some practice to figure out the best way to work together, and also the best way to manage time. We can reliably solve problems, but if we focus all our efforts on the wrong problems then we won’t be using our resources efficiently. In the regional finals, we made sure to prioritize the problems and correctly allocate our resources, and I think that strategy helped us to work more efficiently.

4. How did you come up with your team name?

Myself and one of team members were at a social gathering, discussing possible team names. Our teammate inexplicably said “sometimes I drink barbecue sauce in my nightmares” in response to something else, and we decided then and there that had to be our team name.

5. What’s your team’s secret for all sharing one computer efficiently?

Prioritize based on speed. If a person has a solution that we’re confident in, they get keyboard time. If there are multiple solutions ready to be coded, then the solution which can be implemented fastest gets priority. If two people can code up the same solution, then the fastest coder gets priority.

This team has many tools for success, we can’t wait to see you use them at the World Finals!
