ICPC rewards bright students, but the organization also appreciates the volunteers and coaches who make the local, regional and world contests possible.

Vladimir Parfenov received the 2013 Mark Measures Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service to the ICPC as the 2013 World Finals Vice-Director and as founder and director of the Northeastern Europe Contests from 1996 to the present. This award is presented to a top volunteer with fifteen or more years ICPC experience.

The Joseph S. DeBlasi Outstanding Award is presented annually to a person or group who has played an instrumental role in the success of ICPC for five or more years. The 2013 award went to the team who organized the 2013 World Finals. ICPC also recognized Vladimir Vasilev, Vladimir Parfenov, Roman Elizarov, Matvey Kazakov and Andrey Stankevich for founding and directing NEERC, coaching ITMO teams and preparing the next generation of ITMO contestants and organizing the 2013 World Finals.

ICPC also presented St. Petersburg National Research University ITMO with the 2013 UPE Distinguished International Service Award for the university’s accomplishments and turn as host of the World Finals. This award is given to an institution that demonstrates success of international educational programs for 10 or more years.

World Finals Judge Derek Kisman has played an instrumental role in the success of the finals by being a regular contributor to the contest problem set and brining innovations to the judging process. Kisman, a world finals judge since 2004, received the 2013 World Finals Outstanding Judge Award.

Mohammad Kaykobad of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology has been bringing teams to the World Finals for more than 15 years. He received the Senior Coach Award for his continued success.

ICPC also honored 8 coaches who have brought teams to the World Finals for five years or more. The honorees are as follows:

Jerry Cain – Stanford University

  • Jerry began coaching the Stanford team in 2003, and has attended seven World Finals, including St. Petersburg. 
  • Jerry has been lecturing at Stanford since 1996, has worked at Facebook as a software engineer on the platform team since January 2008.
  • He is responsible for implementing the now-ubiquitous Facebook Like Button seen all over the Internet.

Vitaly Bondarenko – Taras Shevchenko Kiev National University

  • Vitaly started in ICPC as a student and started coaching ICPC teams in 2003.
  • Since 2003, Taras Shevchenko Kiev National University’s team has advanced to the World Finals five times and won a gold medal in 2010.

Ed Corwin/ Toni Logar – South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

  • Ed became interested in the programming team back in 1981 when he started at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Toni helped Ed with the coaching throughout the 1980’s but really assumed a major role starting in the 1990’s.  
  • In 1998, they took a team to its first World Finals appearance in Atlanta.  After that, they were hooked.  
  • After 35 years of marriage, Ed and Toni know how to make best use of their complementary skills.  

Alexander Fridlyand, Ufa State Aviation Technical University

  • Alexander has been preparing college programming teams since 1996 when his school’s team was invited to the first semi-final of NEERC in St. Petersburg.
  • His teams have become the Ural Champion three times, in 1997, 2005, and 2006.
  • Alexander has also brought teams to the World Finals five times.

Elena Kryuchkova, Altai State Technical University

  • Elena has been a coach since 1996, which is the first year Russia took part in the ICPC.  
  • Each year, she works with 12-15 students from her university who have shown strong abilities in programming, agree to work hard, and are persistent in meeting their goals.  

Borja Sotomayor – University of Chicago

  • Borja first became involved with ICPC when he was a Ph.D. student at the University of Chicago.
  • Borja led a team from his alma mater to the 2009 World Finals in Stockholm.
  • The University of Chicago has qualified for every World Finals since, with St. Petersburg marking its fifth consecutive World Finals.

David Van Brackle- Lockheed Martin

  • The ICPC has been a part of David’s life for more than 30 years, competing a two-time contestant for the University of Central Florida in the late 1980s.
  • He has served as a coach for University of Central Florida and Georgia Tech, where his teams attended the World Finals ten times – five with UCF and five with Georgia Tech.  
  • David has been the Chief Judge of his region for the past 5 years.
