Host university St. Petersburg National Research University ITMO answered 10 of 11 ACM-ICPC World Finals questions correctly, earning a gold medal and a record 5th world championship in 10 years.
All of the world’s top 120 teams endured a five-hour session Wednesday that challenged them to work on 11 problems.
Officials froze the scoreboard during the last hour of the competition, leaving everyone in suspense.
During the Closing Ceremony, the teams saw the results on the resolver – an animated version of the final scoreboard. that showed teams earning their final places based on their results on final problem submissions.
First, ICPC officials recognized the ICPC Challenge winning team, teams that were the first to solve the individual questions questions and top scoring teams from each super-region: Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East, South Pacific, Latin America and North America and then as well as the 5 bronze medalists, 4 silver medalists and 4 gold medalists.
As World Champions, the ITMO team raised their trophy as a singer performed Queen’s “We Are The Champions.”

Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Tokyo and National Taiwan University also earned gold medals for finishing in the top 4.
With a dynamic video presentation, officials from Ural Federal University announced that their city, Ekaterinburg, will host the 2014 ICPC World Finals.
Following the ceremony, ICPC participants were driven to a secret location. Then they enjoyed a circus show on water at an old St. Petersburg theater.
Then everyone ate dinner and desert – complete with custom-made burgers, popcorn and ice cream treats. They danced and played games to wind down from the exciting week as a DJ spun uptempo tunes.
